Whether you find website pop-ups annoying or not there’s no arguing at the fact that they are extremely useful when it comes to lead capturing and lead generating. Pop-ups on sites are a great way to engage with your website visitors by offering them a reason to convert. At the same time, many websites are scaring their visitors away with their pop-ups with various mistakes. Here are some useful marketing tips when it comes to website popups.

1. Colour Pallet

Colour might seem like such a novel thing, however, it is the most important factor to consider. A good rule of thumb would be to use 1-2 colours maximum, 1 for your message and one for your call to action button.

2. Off Center Elements

Make sure all of your elements are aligned properly and that everything is symmetrical to create a cohesive design.

3. Clever Headline

You may think you’re being witty with that clever headline but some of your visitors might not share the same humor as you. Make your headline straightforward and the offer clearly stated.

4. Description Doesn’t Describe Offer

Your pop-up should have the three key components: what you want them to do, why they should give you the information you want, and what they will get for it.

5. You’re Asking Too Much

Make sure to only ask what is absolutely necessary, think less is more. Most people will only be willing to give their email address or first name for a general pop-up offer.

6. Your Call to Action Doesn’t Match Your Offer

Your call to action button should clearly match what you want the visitor to do, for example, “subscribe to our newsletter.”

7. Your Offer Isn’t Good Enough

This is the biggest mistake we see when it comes to pop-ups. You should offer something of value to your visitor such as a coupon code or free demo.

8. Your Offer is For the Wrong Audience

Your pop-up should display an offer that matches where your customer is on the buyer’s journey. If they’re on the checkout page don’t have a popup asking them to sign up for your blog and if they’re just browsing your blog don’t have a popup offering them a coupon code.

9. Your Pop-up Displays Immediately

Give them time to digest what is on the page before displaying your popup. Typically 10-15 seconds is a good time frame before displaying your website popup.
